Year of Unity - No Borders, No Fences

Another of the many things that we have found to alienate ourselves from each other is the illusion we call borders. Ages ago, there was no need for borders or fences. There were often territories, but with no real borders, more an understanding between peoples. I will hunt over here and you can hunt over there. As populations grew and resources became scarcer, conflicts began. Soon boundaries were drawn and wars over land and resources began. The problem became exacerbated when people started to cling to material things. More and more people sought to accumulate great wealth and lands. As one group would see that another had more of something they desired, they would attack and take the lands and resources and wealth. Soon borders were put up, fences, to keep others out and protect that which we have acquired. Fortresses, castles with moats, and great walls were erected. Soon, we had countries and states, and other imaginary borders to keep us separated. Recently here, there has been talk of the great wall they want to put across the southern part of the US in order to keep out the "illegal immigrants". More walls, more boundaries, more ways of keeping us apart.
All during the Cold War we heard about the evil empire known to others as Russia was against us. We were told how they meant to do us harm. And in truth, they were being told the same thing about us. So two governments managed to convince their respective peoples that they should hate the other. After the wall came down and people were freer to move between the countries, many Russians came to this country to work. Suddenly, our enemy, were our coworkers. In talking to them, it turns out that many of them actually liked the US and wished they could have come earlier. The people we thought were our enemies, turned out to be friends.
How many other "enemies" have we been separated from because of governments? For those of you who have traveled, how were you treated by the locals when government officials weren't around. If it is like my brother-in-law experienced when he went to help earthquake victims in a country that is supposed to be an enemy, the people looked over their shoulder and then told them how much they loved America. So what is the truth?
What if John Lennon was spot on with his saying, "
Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace "
Imagine a world without borders or boundaries. Where it isn't illegal to go to another area where you might have a chance to provide for your family. Think about it for a moment. Suppose that you had an affinity for the Irish. You loved all things Irish, the culture, the way of life and decided that you wished to move to Ireland and live amongst the Irish, annnndddd you just do it. Imagine that you wanted to live in the deep forest and you could just go there and live. Imagine, if instead of putting up fences so that we wouldn't have to share our resources, we opened our arms. Imagine if we opened our hearts to every living thing. What kind of world would we create?
Think for a moment, from Columbus on through Plymouth, the indigenous people here on Turtle Island welcomed and helped the people who came to these shores. So the idea that I am putting forth is not far fetched. Of course, the end result for those peoples who opened their hearts did not have a happy ending. Yet, could we return to that mentality? Could we find the old ways to be the ways that will get us through whatever is to come?
One thing that needs to happen is that those who cling to the material world will have to let go. Let go, and flow with the river. Yes, it is scary when your whole life has been geared to accumulation of wealth and material goods. Having a change of mind to a more spiritual path, a path where you treat every living thing as a relation and not some object to be possessed, conquered or destroyed.
The Berlin Wall came down. What other walls can we take down? Is it even possible to let go of the material world and bring about a world of peace, harmony, and abundance for all peoples? Those who have accumulated power and wealth will not let go easily. They will fight the changes to the end. They will use whatever propaganda, whatever force necessary to ensure that they can continue to be in control.
I say to you, do not be angry with them. Rather take pity, for they do what they do out of fear. Think of the bully in the school yard. Everyone fears them, until that one day, when that one person stands up to them.
In my journey, I have heard from many people from all walks of life who say the same thing. They want a world where they can live in peace and harmony. A world where you don't have to worry about healthcare, or hunger, or poverty. So many of the people, are saying the same thing, yet the government, the people in power, do everything to prevent this from being. We are so many, and they are so few, remove the borders, remove the fences. Maybe it is time to stop listening to the governments. After all, they haven't listened to us for a very long time. Stop hating others because the government or other people tell us we should. Learn about the other cultures. Remove the ignorance so that the government cannot use it against us to separate us. Remove the illusions of boundaries and see that we truly are one heart, one spirit, one world. We ARE all related.
My heart to your heart, one heart, one spirit.
